The part of the rubric that talks about writing the body paragraph like a conversation is very beneficial. Throughout this part of the rubric it explains an order and requirements that would make for a better body paragraph. This includes clearly stating what the paragraph is going to be about, having quotes, and backing up those quotes with an explanation. I think this part of the rubric is really helpful to me because I tend to get really wordy when I write, so being able to have some sort of format is helpful and will help me stay on track.
Another part of the rubric that helps me prevent run on sentence and repeating myself is the organization section. This section has the writer evaluate if what they are writing makes sense. Is the quotes and wording that the writer is using relating to their original topic, or is it just fluff? It helps determine if the evidence being used makes sense with the rest of the essay. Writing the conclusion is also mentioned. It reminds the author to remember to relate the essays main topic and thesis in the conclusion without stating the same thing as before.
The grammar and MLA section of the rubric is very helpful as well. To make sure that the essay sounds clear a good tactic to do is to read the paper out loud. When writing, words often don’t flow the same way they do when we speak. Reading the piece out loud allows the author to hear the places where the wording could be fixed to flow better. This section also mentions to check for correct grammar and to write create an MLA citation page, which is important so that credit can be given.
I often have a hard time knowing how to start my essay because I want to think of an interesting and engaging hook. I also want to get all my ideas out on the page that it often becomes overwhelming to start. I really liked the different requirements that the rubric gives because they give me goals that I need to put into the piece. Of course I need the introduction needs to introduce my topic, but there are also things like the author’s scope and the stakes the writing has. I just think that these “goals” give the author a good format to write their intro.
Excellent! Continue to return to the rubric. As your writing develops, your needs will continue to change.
