One major part of the writing process is being able to read and revise an essay. Great pieces of writing are not written overnight and are not written in one draft. There is a reason why the writing process is a process because it takes time and revision to make for a clear and concise piece. During my experience in my freshman english 110 class I wrote three major essays, each involving a process of going back to my first draft and revising it. The essay that I believe displays my best revisions is from my narrative essay Forming a Self Identity. When writing an essay I often changed my thesis multiple times during the process. Often I will start writing the body paragraphs of my essay and I will find that I have more evidence to argue a different idea than the one that I was currently arguing. Once I have finished my first draft I will reread what I have written to see how relevant my thesis is to the rest of the essay. In my first draft of Forming a Self Identity I talked more about how a person’s self narrative affects who they are as a person. I still talked about this same topic in my thesis, but I adapted it a little by explaining that the environment can also have an affect on a person’s self narrative. When writing I also like to switch around the order of my paragraphs a lot. Maybe one paragraph that I wrote at the start of the essay will make more sense near the end of my essay instead of the beginning. The order that you talk about piece of evidence in your essay is so important because one body paragraph may be able to lead into a further discussion which can start a new paragraph. I believe that writing is a process that only gets better as you do it more, but no-one is going to write a perfect draft in one run.
